Small Towns are Being Forgotten

I live in Gulfport MS and have written many posts regarding the damage that was done to our beautiful Gulf Coast by Hurricane Katrina. I have written about the many small towns that no longer exist, such as Lakeshore, Waveland, the Kiln, and even Pearlington. I have written about the many small towns that have over 70% of damage such as Pass Christian, D'Iberville, and St Martin.

However, one of these small towns is in dire need of help, Pearlington. In this small town of 1,500, more than 300 of it's citizens are sleeping on the ground at the school football stadium.

Nora Craig is based in Lumberton MS and putting out calls to bring these small towns to the attention to the rest of the world.

She would like to get the word out and maybe have another city adopt these small towns so that the people living there can get the help they need.

Pearlington is only 50 miles from where I live in Gulfport, MS. It hurts to know that there are fellow Mississippians in such plight. I would ask the the cities of Biloxi and Gulfport to adopt these cities, but right now, we are still dealing with infrastructure problems and a major housing shortage of our own.

The six coastal counties in Mississippi had 65,000 homes that were destroyed outright. More that were heavily damaged and are no longer livable. It is estimated that 1/5 of the apartments and mobile homes are no longer livable and potentially 3 out of 4 places of residence in Coastal Mississippi will be rendered unlivable. These counties have around 171,000 residences.

I want to thank all of you who have helped us so much already. Without the many church groups, the many police and fire departments, the Salvation Army, FEMA, the US Armed Forces, the Red Cross, and so many others who have helped and are still helping, many of us in Coastal Mississippi would be sleeping on the ground as well.

If you know of anyone who can help organize your town or city to adopt Pearlington and other small cities, please see Michelle Malkin who provided her e-mial address (malkin@comcast.net) and will put you in contact with Ms. Craig.
