Lining Up the "Axis of Evil"

Rosemary wrote a piece on Iran's Interest in Venezuela on her My News 'n Ideas blog, and asked for my take on it. I read the Venezuela dismisses jitters over nuclear program article, and a sense of creeping dread started to overtake me. Want to know why?
CARACAS, Venezuela (Reuters) - Venezuela will pursue plans to develop nuclear technology for its medical, industrial and oil sectors despite regional jitters over possible cooperation with Iran, the science minister said.

Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez, a critic of the United States and an ally of communist Cuba, met with wary reactions from South American neighbors last month when he said he could acquire nuclear technology with the possible help of Tehran.
So, here we have Venezuela lining up with Iran, but that only scratches the surface. A little context might be helpful. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is driving Venezuela towards communism, and hopes to unify Central and South America as a rival superpower to the U. S.

He has close ties to Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, and aspires to emulate Castro. His ties with Cuba include a subsidy of 90,000 barrels a day of oil to Cuba. He began his relationship with Castro in 1994, after getting out of Venezuelan prison for attempting a coup against the government. In other words, Chavez isn't really the peaceful head of state that the propaganda claims him to be.

The Venezuelan Minister of Science claims the nuclear technology "could be used for industry and for continued medical uses, which the country needs to support hospitals... and the third element is for energy for the oil industry." Of course it could. It could also be used to make weapons, like North Korea did. Do we all need to be reminded that nukes are nukes, and we can't let despots have them.

I hope I can piece this together in a way that makes sense. We have a communist revolutionary, who idolizes Castro, running Venezuela, the fifth largest exporter of oil in the world. We have a terrorist that took American hostages in 1979 running Iran, with the second largest oil reserves in the world. We have China trying to buy all the oil rights to the Gulf of Mexico. We have Venezuela telling OPEC that they won't increase oil production, and embarking on a nuclear program backed by a thug that is the absolute definition of a despot. We have North Korea, which has already proven why you can't trust dictators to have access to nuclear technology, and Iran, trying their hand at the same trick.

Are we to believe that the Venezuelans aren't trying to fool us the same way North Korea did? It seems to me that we have the Axis of Evil lining up, and adding allies to place around the world in strategic locations, the way the Evil Empire did in the cold war. Cuba was central in it's strategic location to the Soviets, as was Central America. Now these places are falling back in line with each other to bring down America. My friends, this is very disturbing indeed.
